Dublin or Bust!

Well it’s off to Dublin I go. To the Biggest of the Big Smokes in Ireland. And it’s about time too. For the past three months I’ve been living in Portlaoise. A shit-hole…to be completely honest. Home of Nuts and Bolts…mental hospital and prison…Irelands high security lock-up for our most famous inmates…John Gilligan, Tosser Meehan, and plenty of other unsavoury bastards. It’s as though the population of Portlaoise is made up of these ex-cons that had only enough money to get a taxi to Portlaoise or a bottle of booze/wrap of dope and ended up stumbling into town and laying down their hats. Either that or their families were tired of commuting and settled here instead. Suffice it to say, there is no shortage of hefty women, wearing tiny string-tops, displaying “I ♥ Johnny” tattoos. And what brought me to this delightful little town??? This blossoming town that in a matter of years will probably, thanks to decentralisation, become a city. Well, why do you think? What reason would anyone want
(I use the term want very lightly here)
to move to a shit-hole? Probably the second most popular reason… Work!!! The most popular reason being the opposite sex, of course…a perfectly valid reason, I must add, and a hell of a lot more exciting.
And now, with my sentence served, I can carry on my journey to bigger and better things. And so, to Dublin. What marvels will I encounter?

Queues, queuing, and queuers...

Queues both suck and blow at the same time (not literally, otherwise a black-hole would form and that would be it for all of us). The queue itself is not a problem for me. Queues are a necessary part of everyday life, particularly when more than one person wants to do something that only one person can do at a time. Hence the formation of a queue...ta-daa! (The word 'queue' does not exist on the American continent. Over there if you ask 'Is this the queue?' you are likely to receive a variety of strange looks, mainly 'what the fuck are you talking about?' looks, and the odd gunshot wound... depending on who you ask). I don't mind queuing. Sometimes it just has to be done. What bugs me are the queuers. Some people are crap at queuing. So crap, in fact, that I have come up with a list of guidelines that may, or may not, remedy the situation.

1) Old people DO have to queue. They are not exempt from the queuing procedure purely based on the fact that they haven't died yet. This goes for queuing for busses, the post office, and for the checkout in Penny's. I don't care how old you are, I've been queuing for 16 hours to pay for these underpants!

2) Making a 'thut' noise will not increase the speed of the queue. Neither will breathing loudly through your nose, looking at your watch every 43 seconds, saying 'come on, come on, come on, what's taking you, stupid woman!!!' under your breath, and leaning awkwardlly at an impossible angle to one side to see what the hold up is. All of these actions may, however, cause the person in front of you to perform a swift roundhouse kick to your jaw.

3) Farting is a no-no!

4) Talking loudly on your mobile is annoying anywhere. It's annoyance is multiplied by 'pie' in a queue.

5) Do not stand too close to the person in front of you. Sometimes this is unavoidable and is therefore acceptable behavior (e.g. a concert where there are 75,000 people behind you trying to get into the pit). Standing too close to the person in front of you is completely unacceptable in a 'casual' queue, for an ATM or in Tesco for example. Not being racist, but this seems to be the preferred queuing method of the French! (any sentance begining with the phrase 'not being racist, but' is bound to be racist, isn't it)

There are more guidelines, but I feel these are the most important.

Wooden Stirrers, and Other Coffee Shop Grievances!!!

I love tea. I also like coffee (although I am trying to quit drinking coffee after a bad experience when I drank three cups in about thirty minutes after not having any coffee in about three months....suffice it to say I was a bit hyper, shaky and scared for about six hours!).

I find it very relaxing to go to a coffee shop, drink tea, eat a scone with butter and jaaaammm!!!, and talk a tremendous amount of shite! So whats my problem? Coffee shops annoy me, which is a bit of a paradox I suppose.
.
Why do they insist on using wooden stirrers??? Wooden stirrers make the tea taste like shit, you always end up chewing them, which results in small pieces of wood everywhere, and splinters in your tongue! It's also a bit of a balancing act trying to take out the tea bag and manoeuvering it to the tiny, dirty hole that leads to an abyss filled with tea bags and wooden sticks. And, there is always one dickhead who puts the used stirrer back in with the clean ones!!! The alternative to using a wooden stirrer is oftern using a plastic knife, which ultimately leads to a severed tea bag spilling tea leaves back into the cup, where-upon the entire concept of the ingenious tea bag is lost!

Which leads me on to the disappointment of seating areas in coffee shops! Not much happens in coffee shops. People come in, drink their drink, maybe have something to eat, talk shite for a while, and leave! How can this process cause such a mess? or is it that hard to clean up after themselves???

A trip to the coffee shop will always end up with coffee/tea/capa-frape-cocoa-mocha-chapalapatino soaked elbows. Wooden sticks are stewn across the table like no-mans business! Savaged sugar packets lie decimated on the floor, like a scene from Schindler's List. Not to mention, jam covered seats leading to sticky, is that shit-stains on your lovely new pants!!!

There is also that matter of coffee shop names. The name of a coffee shop can give a great indication of what awaits you inside. A good rule of thumb, is to avoid cafes with the following terms:

1) Express...eg Coffee Express

2) City...eg Java City

3) Factory...Bean Factory (don't know if this place exists, but I would stay clear if it does)...Bagel Factory (all of the above can also apply to bagel bars, juice-boosty fucks and a whole plethora of 'the pope's children'-aged bullshit['the pope's children' is a reference to that pompous, but actually quite good tv presenter/journalist/author guy off the big bite].

4) Stop...I think you get the picture by now...
